Design Process & AI
What is its reason to exist? a standard question in the design process. What makes it worthy of coming to life? Beyond Is it the most soft? does it bring joy? is this a design that really needs to be out there? Is this a responsible product? Does the purpose overall benefit the broader spectrum? If this is not a work of art, is it pushing consumerism or uplifting the consumer?
At Magic Sourcing Las Vegas, in the tech section, we saw demonstrations of ai designing the “best selling” collection, and while the technology is impressive, I wonder beyond, okay this is going to be the best sweatset for all of the prompts you gave it - colors, style based on parameters - but without creativity, it’s just another product, and so what need does it fill? We already have enough clothes to last lifetimes over - so just why?
If you try googling “how many clothes exist on earth to last the population of earth,” the results are enough for you to start building a doomsday shelter - insulated by your clothes. Still, you’ll just breathe air circulated through plastic, as synthetic fabrics are derived from fossil fuels.
The future of fashion and apparel must be beyond design for consumerism. Not driven by fast fashion brands capitalizing over marketing micro-niching to drive consumption. Let’s buy art and wear responsibly clothing that is made with you in mind, holistically.
